I think my inspiration comes from a lot of different places, honestly…

Often when someone asks about the mood or feeling behind something, I’m like “I just make things without thinking;” mainly because I rarely ever try to create anything specific. Everything from music/my mood/alcohol consumption/generally how much energy I have on any given day where I don’t have day-job work to do tends to factor in…

But if you mean to trace it back a bit more and really dig deeper into what may or may not have helped define certain styles of mine… I used to get really bad nightmares all the time, but they mostly consisted of all unfamiliar stuff - like they weren’t supposed to be MY nightmares - I was just witnessing (or taking part in) dreams meant for someone else. I think that had a lot of an overall effect on me as a person and an artist both.

I also used to live in this really weird old building (a 35,000 sq. ft. ex highschool, halfway renovated to be corporate offices for a company that went bankrupt during reno) and I think I drew a lot of energy from that, too. (This one is probably a story for another day.) It felt very silent hill like a lot of the time - tiny little town, totally dead at night, cemetery within walking distance (with a park - like, with a playground - inside said cemetery), old orange street lamps, heavy fogs rolling in, strange noises; and just being in this big, mostly empty building by myself was just a weird experience in general at times. I went through phases where I’d either “doesn’t afraid of anything!” (I’d turn on this old shortwave radio, tune it to some station on the other side of the world that would crackle and fade in and out of foreign broadcasts/static, put on some Set Fire to Flames album, and just not even think about how creepy that really was) or I’d be terrified, turning on every light in the building just to walk through one strangely-cold hallway.

I’ve heard the term “dark” a lot, but I don’t really think of myself as being a dark person or dark artist, because I don’t really like the idea of “dark” being something negative.

Annnnd, yeah, big wall of text, not sure if it adds a whole lot of insight, but…. maybe?

And again, thanks, I’m always happy to hear about it when someone likes what I’ve been doing. :)

Hahaha, well, thanks. I try to mix it up when I can/show photos I’ve taken of other people as well… I just don’t have a lot of opportunities to shoot other people (and a lot of the self portraits I do use in my art are not even recent). Plus, when it comes to the abstract stuff, I think I manipulate things enough to where it shouldn’t matter (I feel kinda weird manipulating the hell out of photos of other people, too), but h8rs gon h8, I guess? It’s kind of just not my problem. It’s not like I’m going to change my ways because someone implies I do it out of vanity, because I (and most everyone I know personally) know that’s not the case.

I seriously think I get asked that question just to bug me sometimes, like it’s someone I know just trying to ruffle my feathers.

p.s. if someone wants to book Meagan, that’s totally fine by me.

A big, fat response to “why do you use your face in a lot of your art?”

There are a lot of reasons, and I’ve answered this question more times than I think is even really fair… and often wonder how regularly other self portrait artists get asked similar, if it bothers them, etc. I guess it’s just a touchy subject for me, because I use my own self portraits just out of convenience more than anything. (+ There are no hoops to jump through, no licensing or release forms, etc., the list could go on…)

What’s odd to me about this question is that I’ve met some super self obsessed artists, and I don’t think subject matter is really ever a defining point of someone’s personality.

What can I really say? I like faces. I feel like I and many other people are drawn to them, and that having a face, a character, in an image helps express certain things better sometimes. It’s also something with which one might more easily relate; I feel it adds balance between the abstract and the familiar at times. It’s not that I particularly like MY face. It’s just that my face has always been accessible - even when I lived in the middle of bumblefuck nowhere and had no friends outside of the internet. I guess it’s kind of a signature thing of sorts now… though it’s not like EVERY piece of art I make has my (or any) face in it.

It was back when I first started getting into photography/digital art that I began experimenting with self portraiture. I had extremely low self esteem and was highly insecure, but I never thought much of using myself as a subject because, frankly, I just didn’t have anyone else to photograph. There was all this work that went into, like, creating a character… like, making myself into someone I don’t really even think I am or was, but someone whose image I could use in my work to convey certain expressions.

I still don’t have the best self esteem, and, honestly, using myself in my art doesn’t help that as much as one might think either. I actually have quite a bit of trouble even identifying with the majority of my photographs. I mean, I don’t really see myself in them, but I 100% own them; combined, those two aspects make me a little more comfortable manipulating them and using them in my personal work.

I didn’t (still don’t) want to feel like I was compromising the integrity of my work by using stock art/someone else’s photography. I wanted to use all original source material - every base photo, every texture, all things I made to use. It’s like making all original sounds vs. sampling in music, sort of. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it, I don’t mind when other artists do it, but it’s just not something I like to do, personally. (Though, collaborative work is a bit different.)

On a side note, I also use my friend Meagan’s face a lot as well; I don’t think many people realize that though, because we do have a number of similar features. (Fuck, her own mother has even mistaken photos before, thinking a photo of me was her or vice versa.) Why Meagan? Because she makes herself available, she’s easy to work with, and she’s my best friend. I didn’t choose her because of our physical similarities; she lived in the same small town, she showed up in my life, we became best friends. That’s all there is to that. Convenience and whatnot.

So, that’s it, really. Even when it is, I don’t really like to think of it as my face.

TL:DR

Why is all of your art focused on pictures of your face? Isn't that a bit self obsessed?

Oh, you know, it’s because I’m totally in love with myself… (and Meagan, apparently, - ‘cause she seems to appear pretty regularly as well, but that’s probably just because she looks a lot like me.) Yes, you’re right, it is super self obsessed. I am a terrible human being. Awful, really. Self absorbed, evil incarnate, etc., etc… ♥
